This Cancellation Policy explains how cancellations work for Skills & Bids service bookings, fixed-price and hourly engagements, subscriptions, and other marketplace transactions.

It forms part of the Skills & Bids Terms of Service and should be read together with the Marketplace Agreement, Refund Policy, Client Agreement, Freelancer Agreement, and the accepted contract, booking, order, or subscription terms.

Nothing in this Policy limits a cancellation or consumer right that cannot lawfully be limited.

1. Transaction-specific cancellation terms control

Skills & Bids supports different kinds of marketplace work, so cancellation consequences are not identical for every transaction.

For service bookings in particular, the Platform may show cancellation terms before the client confirms the booking. Those terms are recorded with the booking.

Once accepted, later changes to a freelancer’s service listing or cancellation settings do not retroactively alter that booking’s cancellation terms.

A fee, forfeiture, no-show amount, or other cancellation consequence must not be imposed merely because it appears in a listing after the booking was made.

2. What cancellation does and does not mean

Cancelling a transaction generally stops future performance to the extent supported by the transaction flow.

Cancellation does not necessarily:

  • erase work already completed;
  • erase valid time already worked;
  • undo an already approved milestone;
  • create an automatic full refund;
  • reverse a payment already transferred or paid out without a financial recovery process;
  • resolve an existing dispute;
  • remove confidentiality, intellectual-property, tax, payment, or recordkeeping obligations that survive termination; or
  • cancel a different transaction between the same users.

Refund consequences are governed by the Refund Policy, the accepted transaction terms, and applicable law.

3. Service-booking cancellation

3.1 Before freelancer acceptance

A client may cancel a service-booking request before the freelancer accepts it.

Where a payment authorization exists, Skills & Bids will normally seek to release or cancel the authorization rather than capture the service amount.

If a payment has already been captured due to the applicable payment flow, the amount attributable to the unaccepted service will normally be handled under the Refund Policy.

3.2 After freelancer acceptance

Once the freelancer accepts the booking, the cancellation terms accepted for that booking apply.

Those terms may define:

  • a free-cancellation period;
  • a late-cancellation period;
  • a cancellation amount or percentage;
  • treatment of approved travel, materials, or add-ons;
  • rescheduling rules;
  • client no-show treatment;
  • freelancer cancellation treatment; and
  • other transaction-specific conditions.

The Platform may implement those terms by:

  • releasing the full payment authorization;
  • capturing an agreed cancellation amount and releasing the remainder;
  • capturing the agreed booking amount where lawfully due;
  • issuing a full or partial refund after capture; or
  • routing the issue to a dispute or support workflow.

3.3 No undisclosed late fee

If no late-cancellation fee or similar amount was clearly disclosed and accepted for the booking, Skills & Bids will not create one solely after the client asks to cancel.

This does not prevent recovery of a different amount independently owed under law or another accepted term.

3.4 After service start

After a freelancer starts the service, cancellation becomes an early termination of an in-progress service rather than a simple pre-service cancellation.

The parties should document:

  • what work has been completed;
  • whether completion can safely and reasonably continue;
  • approved materials, add-ons, travel, or expenses already incurred;
  • the reason for stopping; and
  • any agreed partial completion amount.

The client may remain responsible for properly performed work or other amounts validly due.

If the parties cannot agree, either party may use the supported dispute process.

4. Freelancer cancellation of service bookings

A freelancer should cancel only when they cannot lawfully, safely, or reasonably perform the accepted service.

The freelancer should cancel promptly when they know they cannot perform and should not wait until the scheduled start merely to avoid a reliability consequence.

Where the freelancer cancels and the client did not cause the cancellation:

  • the client will normally not owe a freelancer cancellation fee for the unperformed service;
  • an uncaptured authorization will normally be released;
  • captured amounts attributable to unperformed service will be handled under the Refund Policy; and
  • Skills & Bids may record the cancellation for marketplace reliability, ranking, trust, safety, support, or enforcement purposes.

Repeated, strategic, discriminatory, retaliatory, or deceptive freelancer cancellations may lead to account restrictions.

5. Client no-show, access failure, or unavailability

A client may be treated as a no-show or client-caused failure to receive service only according to the accepted booking terms and available evidence.

Examples may include:

  • the client is not present for an on-site appointment;
  • the freelancer cannot lawfully or reasonably access the agreed location because of a client-side issue;
  • the client does not join a scheduled remote appointment;
  • required client-provided information is not available despite reasonable notice; or
  • the client prevents performance after the freelancer is ready and able to begin.

The applicable booking policy determines whether a cancellation amount remains payable.

Skills & Bids may consider timestamps, messages, booking data, check-in/start records, and other reasonable evidence.

6. Freelancer no-show

A freelancer who fails to appear or make themselves available for a scheduled service without valid reason may be treated as having cancelled the booking.

The client will normally be entitled to release or refund of amounts attributable to the unperformed service, subject to the Refund Policy and applicable law.

Repeated freelancer no-shows may affect marketplace access and trust signals.

7. Rescheduling

A reschedule is not a cancellation when both parties agree to move the booking and the Platform records the new schedule.

Where supported:

  • the new date/time should be confirmed through the Platform;
  • any material price, scope, location, add-on, or cancellation-term change should be separately accepted;
  • payment authorization may need to be updated or renewed; and
  • the transaction record should preserve the agreed history.

A party is not required to accept a proposed reschedule unless the accepted booking terms say otherwise.

If no reschedule is agreed, the applicable cancellation rules continue to apply.

8. Safety, illegality, emergencies, and exceptional circumstances

A user should not be required to continue an on-site or remote service where doing so would create an immediate serious safety risk or require unlawful conduct.

Skills & Bids may review cancellation consequences differently where credible evidence shows:

  • an emergency;
  • a serious safety concern;
  • unlawful requested work;
  • a location that is materially unsafe or inaccessible;
  • a sudden legal or licensing restriction;
  • severe service disruption;
  • natural disaster or comparable event; or
  • another circumstance outside a party’s reasonable control.

An exceptional-circumstance review is fact-specific and does not guarantee a particular refund or payment outcome.

9. Fixed-price and milestone cancellation

Either party may request to end future fixed-price work according to the applicable contract flow.

Cancellation does not automatically unwind completed work.

When a fixed-price contract or milestone arrangement is cancelled:

  • completed and approved work remains payable unless a valid refund/dispute ground applies;
  • work that has not been performed may be eligible for release or refund;
  • partially completed work may be resolved by agreement, partial payment, partial refund, or dispute;
  • unfunded future milestones may be cancelled without becoming payable merely because they were planned; and
  • ownership of unpaid/refunded deliverables remains governed by the intellectual-property terms of the applicable agreements.

A party should not use cancellation to evade payment for work already validly earned.

10. Hourly-contract cancellation or end of work

A client or freelancer may end future hourly work using the supported contract process, subject to any accepted notice or scheduling obligation.

Ending hourly work:

  • stops authorization for future work at the point determined by the contract flow;
  • does not delete time already worked;
  • does not automatically reject submitted time;
  • does not erase an open dispute;
  • does not automatically refund an already approved billing period; and
  • does not prevent outstanding billing periods from completing their normal review, payment, dispute, and reconciliation lifecycle.

Freelancers should stop recording new time once authorization to continue work has ended.

Clients remain responsible for legitimate authorized time worked before the effective end.

11. Custom quotes and other marketplace engagements

For custom quotes or other transaction types, the accepted transaction-specific cancellation terms govern.

If the accepted terms do not specify a particular cancellation consequence, Skills & Bids may apply the closest relevant marketplace workflow in a manner consistent with:

  • work already performed;
  • amounts already earned;
  • payment state;
  • evidence;
  • the Refund Policy; and
  • applicable law.

12. Subscription cancellation

Subscription cancellation is separate from cancellation of a client-freelancer transaction.

Unless stated otherwise at checkout or required by law:

  • subscriptions renew automatically for the selected term until cancelled;
  • a user may cancel future renewal through the account cancellation method made available by Skills & Bids;
  • cancellation takes effect for future renewal rather than retroactively cancelling the already-paid billing period;
  • paid access may continue through the end of the current billing period; and
  • unused entitlements do not have cash value.

Where a subscription is accepted online, Skills & Bids intends to provide an online method to end automatic renewal without requiring the user to initiate cancellation through a more burdensome medium.

Refund treatment after subscription cancellation is governed by the Refund Policy and applicable law.

13. Cancellation by Skills & Bids

Skills & Bids may cancel, suspend, prevent, or unwind a transaction where reasonably necessary because of:

  • fraud or suspected unauthorized payment;
  • sanctions or legal restrictions;
  • material Terms or Community Standards violations;
  • serious safety risk;
  • invalid or expired professional authorization;
  • payment failure;
  • duplicate or technically erroneous transaction creation;
  • abuse of marketplace systems;
  • an account restriction that makes lawful performance impossible; or
  • another reason permitted by the Terms or applicable law.

When Skills & Bids cancels a transaction, the financial result depends on:

  • whether work was already performed;
  • whether a payment was authorized or captured;
  • amounts already validly earned;
  • third-party payment status;
  • the reason for cancellation; and
  • applicable law.

Platform cancellation is not automatically a determination that one party committed wrongdoing.

14. Mutual cancellation

Clients and freelancers may mutually agree to cancel an engagement.

Where possible, the agreement should identify:

  • the effective cancellation date;
  • whether any work is accepted;
  • the amount, if any, remaining payable;
  • whether a full or partial refund is agreed;
  • treatment of deliverables and confidential information; and
  • whether any scheduled appointment is released.

Skills & Bids may require the parties to use a supported workflow rather than relying only on private messages, so the payment and ledger state can match the agreement.

15. Disputes about cancellation

A party who believes a cancellation was wrongly classified or financially resolved should use the supported dispute or support process.

Relevant evidence may include:

  • the snapshotted cancellation policy;
  • accepted booking or contract terms;
  • scheduling and attendance records;
  • messages;
  • deliverables;
  • time records;
  • location/access information relevant to the service;
  • service evidence;
  • payment events; and
  • safety or policy reports.

A Platform resolution may result in no charge, full payment, partial payment, full refund, partial refund, cancellation, completion of work, or another supported remedy.

16. Abuse of cancellation systems

Users may not:

  • repeatedly create and cancel sham bookings;
  • deliberately reserve unavailable time to disrupt a freelancer;
  • accept bookings they do not intend to perform;
  • falsely claim a no-show;
  • fabricate emergency or safety evidence;
  • manipulate timing to manufacture a cancellation fee;
  • use cancellation to evade valid payment; or
  • use cancellation threats to obtain unrelated concessions.

Skills & Bids may restrict marketplace access for serious or repeated abuse.

17. Changes to this Policy

Skills & Bids may update this Cancellation Policy prospectively.

A later policy version does not normally alter transaction-specific cancellation terms already accepted and snapshotted for an existing booking or contract, except where required by law or expressly agreed by the parties.
